Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. On these holidays, America shows its deep respect. With deep discounts! Uncle Jay takes a holiday from the regular news to explain our multi-Monday holiday traditions. Or hey, you can always go back to Bob Costas.

Why is it that Monday and not Friday was chosen for these fake holidays?

And how did I end up as an early comment?

I think I understand it now Uncle Jay.
I should take the trash out on Monday even though my regular day is Tuesday? But if my regular day was Monday, I should take it out anyway even though they aren’t going to pick it up until Tuesday, which is my regular day??
Sorry Uncle Jay. I thought I understood it. I’m going to watch the video again……

Hi Oncle Jay:
I’m trying to find words that can describe the kind of humor I hear in your remarks….things that make me laugh so much, I often miss what follows and have to go back for ‘catch up’. Clever is an understated word to describe this kind of material, which is enormously appreciated.
Sincere thanks for all that,
Robert O

Of course you didn’t get the E-mail, Truman. the world’s population was all conspiring to have YOU COME FIRST! (sounds like a new surviving-members-of-the-WHO-band release)

Why do only some of us get some of these holidays off but the government gets them all off?

LOL When I used to be in appliances sales we used to joke about doing an “I have a dream of saving 10% on all Energy Star Appliances” campaign because we thought it was odd to have a sale for MLK Day!

The Monday thing was set up to make it easier for Employers and Employees, not that we have that many left in the USA.
Could you see getting the day off on Thursday to celebrate Presidents Day for Example and then have to go back to work on Friday…. That would not be good because everyone would call in sick on Friday, and leave Busnisses hold the shopping bag.

For years I have been saying that America does not know how to properly treat its heroes and here you are pointing it out for everyone. I’ve thought how fortunate we’ve been not to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday by having sales. “I had a dream at [name your local mattress and bedding store].” It would be just as tacky to have a Dr. Martin Luther King Day whites sale. Pillow cases and bed sheets are all half off.”
