The first candidate to bring up health care was Teddy Roosevelt, who thought it was a national security issue and should be part of the national infrastructure, like public roads or defense.

I have public insurance now as a disabled vet: I pay for nothing. Congressmen and Senators are vested in Federal health care in five years. They don't have to worry about paying for insurance or mondo hospital bills. Active military receive free public health care, too. My wife, who had a broken leg some months ago and required surgery, got the whole bill written off (tens of thousands of dollars) because she is my dependent and she is also covered by the Department of Defense. Medicaid and Medicare are of course federal health insurance. Social Security is of course, federal retirement benefits. Public roads are federally funded, too, so are police and fire departments, you don't have to pay the fire department to put out your house . . .

During colonial days the good roads were mostly privately owned turnpikes. But the Feds made a public option on roads and now there are only a handful of privately owned turnpikes in the US.

But if people want to continue paying companies like AIG that received federal bailout money after squandering everyone's insurance money, for way overpriced insurance, I say let 'em. I'm covered. I won't lose my Federal insurance for losing a job.

I had AIG car insurance when I was stationed overseas, but it ain't worth the cost of their bailout for cheating their investors.

has anyone thought about, or does anyone agree that if the pharmaceutical companies would quit their advertising, medical costs just may drop a bit. We are paying for the tv ads that do no good, because a doctor has to prescribe it anyway, it only makes us a bunch of hypochondriacts or however you spell it.

Uncle Jay, can you help me understand why many in the US Congress who are now expressing vehement opposition to government intervention into health care decisions are the same people who had no problem with the government trying to intervene in health care decisions for Terri Schiavo?

We made a terrible mistake in Britain when our National Health Service started. Instead of requiring patients to claim consultation fees after a visit to a physician we gave the doctors a huge monthly salary related to the number of patients they were (allegedly) looking after. The result has been that most doctors see patients as nuisances and have forgotten that it is our taxes which pay for National Health care. So beware United States, limit your coming new system to natives only and make doctors depend upon their patients for their earnings.

Uncle Jay, can you pick out the people that haven't been screwed over by a health insurance company yet?

"Love what you do Uncle Jay. This week I got distracted thinking if you shaved your Goatee, would you look like Dick Cheney?" WKF

Have you ever shot your lawyer Uncle Jay? Have you ever worked as a decoy for VP Cheney when they moved him from bunker to bunker?

Let's implement tort reform through all levels of healthcare, make medical tests portable (so we don't pay for replication), reduce the risk of drug discovery and testing, increase full drug disclosure, allow menu driven medical care, reduce unnecessary defensive testing, and leave people alone who don't want insurance.

I just wonder what public outrage they're going to set off now to distract us from the current legislation long enough for them to pass it.
